For nearly 40 years, the communities of Palmer, Alaska and Saroma, Japan have enjoyed a close relationship as sister cities.
As part of that relationship, Saroma Elementary and Sherrod Elementary have, for the past five years, develeped a connection that centers on online communication. From November to March, the fifth grade classes communicate via Skype. The students introduce themselves, play games, share presentations on cultural events, and (for the Saroma students) work on language skills.
