K. Shane Artz is a high school music teacher living in Palmer, Alaska. He joined the staff at Houston High School as music director in 2011 where he teaches guitar, choir, band, teen-leadership and fitness management. In addition to working in the public schools he teaches trumpet privately and performs in the Mat-Su Community Band and Alaska Blaskapelle.
Prior to teaching music in Houston, Alaska he received a Bachelor's of Music Education (B.M.) from the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he studied trumpet with Karen Gustafson and Music Education with Vince Cee. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Music Education (M.M.) from Central Washington University and plans on completing the degree in 2016.
Artz has served as a clinician, adjudicator, presenter and guest conductor for various community musical events. He is an active member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the International Trumpet Guild (ITG), and the International Society for Improvised Music (ISIM). He holds positions as treasurer of Alaska Music Educators Association (AMEA) and the Alaska Choral Directors Association (AkCDA).
In his spare time he enjoys listening to jazz, underground hip-hop, post-rock and bluegrass; starting books, practicing Bach on piano, working out, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his wife.
